Mayor Gant was appointed to the Edmonston Town Council in 1992. She was elected in 1994 and continues to serve the community today as Mayor, having been elected Mayor in 2014 as the first female African American Mayor of the Town. Mayor Gant was re-elected in 2017, 2020 and again in 2023.
Mayor Gant has a strong record of service to the Maryland Municipal League (MML). A member since 1992, Mayor Gant has served on the MML Convention Planning Committee as a member, Vice Chairman for two terms and Chairman for two terms. She has served on the Communications Committee as a member and Chair and was appointed as MML Board member at large from 2013-2015. Mayor Gant was elected by her peers as the president-elect of MML in June 2015. In 2016, she assumed the role of President of the Maryland Municipal League over 157 incorporated municipalities in the State. In 2019, she was awarded the MML “Lifetime Achievement Award”. Mayor Gant graduated from the University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy Local Government Academy of Excellence in 2019.
She has served as President of the Prince George’s County Municipal Association, is the current President of the Black Mayor’s Association and a member of the Maryland Municipal Mayor’s Association. Mayor Gant serves on the Local Government Insurance Trust Board of Directors.
Mayor Gant is a Veteran having served her county for 7 years. Mayor Gant has been a Property Manager for over 23 years, having managed large apartment housing complexes. In her free time, Mayor Gant enjoys spending time with her daughter and 5 grandchildren and serving her church community.
